3 HOUR INTRODUCTORY LESSON: TRADITIONAL SWAHILI WOODCARVING
Fun and engaging one-on-one beginner lessons for you and your friends while visiting Lamu Island.
This is a one-of-a kind class, in a beautiful location, is taught by a woman woodcarving artist. You get to work with your hands to make your own bespoke souvenir and connect with your creative side. Experience first hand immersion into local culture and history through learning this beautiful handcraft that has been passed down the generations.
The workshops are held at Earth Love Healing Center in Shella. A beautiful and serene permaculture shamba (Swahili for farm) that has been regenerated and reclaimed from sand dunes. Alternatively, the lessons may be done at your preferred location & only a sturdy table would be required. I will provide a location link for you to make your way to the studio or I could pick you at a familiar spot in Shela (the main Bahari jetty or a hotel etc)

The lesson is 3 hours and is $75 per person. The price is inclusive of all the cost of materials and tools used.
We will discuss on what you would like to carve to help set up a solid foundation according to your needs. For the design of your art; you may opt to do your own bespoke design or You may choose a class on: Swahili flower carving, Swahili geometric chip carving, or Lettering. The final piece will be carved on Swahili plates, however, you may opt for another flat piece of wood that is shaped differently i.e fish shape, oval shape, irregular shape.
N.B: The classes are structured to be 3 hours long but can sometimes run over according to the needs of the student(s); of which I am happy to accommodate, for you to go home with something made from a relaxed and playful mind state.
At the end of the workshop, you leave with your beautiful piece of art. Why buy a mainstream souvenir, whereas, you could learn how to make your own custom one, that is tailored to your needs and interests? Additionally, you get to appreciate the valuable work that goes into working with your hands.
The lesson is extremely child friendly and I have observed that these little people have an exceptional affinity for woodcarving! They usually know exactly what they want to carve and visibly bloom while doing it! I go at their pace, giving lots of encouragement and breaks.
